Two men guilty over serious street attack

Three Southland men appeared in the High Court at Invercargill yesterday in relation to an alleged attack last year which left a man with serious injuries.

David Dean Lawson and Pihama John Tauroa pleaded guilty to one charge each of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

They were also facing two other charges but, as the Crown did not offer evidence on the remaining charges against each defendant, those charges were dismissed.

Justice Osborne convicted and remanded them until their sentencing in February.

An 18-year-old man also appeared by audiovisual link in court but was remanded until his trial next year.

He had entered a not guilty plea in a previous appearance.

The alleged attack happened on February 16 last year, at the corner of Ythan and Janet Sts, in Appleby, Invercargill.

Detective Senior Sergeant Stu Harvey said the victim was transported to the hospital with serious injuries and was released to recover in the care of his family.
