Airlift rescue after tramper breaks ankle

A woman has been airlifted from the back country in the Southern Alps after she activated her emergency locator beacon this afternoon.

A Maritime NZ spokesman said the lone female tramper was found this evening by a helicopter crew roughly 70km west of Wanaka in the Lake Alabaster area. She had a fractured right ankle, was stabilised and flown to Queenstown.

She was met at the airfield by St John for further assessment and would be taken to hospital in either Queenstown or Dunedin for treatment, the spokesman said.

As the beacon was triggered in a back country area, an alpine cliff rescue team was dispatched with the helicopter crew as a precautionary measure.

No further details were available.
