Filmed and edited by Wānaka-based film-maker Ben Wallbank, Onwards captures Helene’s deeply personal journey through cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.
The film was recently selected as a finalist at the 2025 Doc Edge Film Festival earlier this year, and this local screening aims to raise both awareness and funds for cancer support services in the region.
"My hope is to use Onwards to raise awareness of cancer and highlight the amazing mahi of the Cancer Society," says Helene. "This is about supporting others navigating their own journeys, while giving back to a cause that supported me when I needed it most."
Just six weeks after finishing fifth in the Tarawera 100-mile Ultramarathon in Rotorua in February 2023, Helene was diagnosed with aggressive tongue cancer. This raw, intimate film follows her fight to reclaim voice and identity, revealing extraordinary strength, vulnerability, and resilience in a new, life-altering endurance challenge.
In May 2023, she underwent a partial glossectomy — removal of part of her tongue — followed by six weeks of radiation therapy in Dunedin. During treatment, Helene stayed at Daffodil House in Dunedin, fondly referred to as "Cancer Camp" by residents — a Cancer Society accommodation facility for patients receiving treatment away from home.
"I’m incredibly grateful for the support I received from the Cancer Society during my time in Dunedin," Helene says. "Now it’s my turn to give back."
With 77 New Zealanders diagnosed with cancer every day, this fundraiser highlights the importance of ongoing support, research, and awareness efforts. Proceeds from the event will go directly to Cancer Society Southern.
