Cardrona Alpine Resort is hoping to start upgrading snowmaking infrastructure at Treble Cone skifield as early as next month but it still has to sign a Department of Conservation lease before it can take possession.

On Friday the Commerce Commission granted Cardrona Alpine Resort Ltd clearance to acquire either the shares of Treble Cone Investments Ltd or the assets it uses to operate the Treble Cone skifield.

Yesterday Cardrona general manager Bridget Legnavsky said she was ‘‘super stoked’’ to get approval from the commerce commission and they were still working through the Doc lease (Treble Cone skifield sits on public conservation land).

Ms Legnavsky said she believed negotiating the lease was more a procedural matter, she did not expect any problems and she was hoping the handover would occur some time in January.

Ms Legnavsky would then become general manager of both resorts.

‘‘I feel very excited about TC, it is a really different resort to Cardrona which is very much into high-performance sport, it is quite broad and flat and we don’t have a lot of issues with snow and snow management.

‘‘TC is all about snow management, it is steep terrain and it attracts really good skiers.’’

Ms Legnavsky said once the deal was complete they would be focusing on improving snowmaking infrastructure and the power needed to run it.

‘‘We definitely will be investing in those areas, it might be more guns rather than fixing the pipes, and the power should be easier because it just depends how long it takes to order a generator, but we can’t get things moving until we know the deal is actually sealed.’’

She said over the next few weeks and months she would be doing ‘‘a lot of listening and learning from the TC staff’’ to ensure uniqueness remained.

‘‘The last thing we want to do is copy Cardrona.

‘‘We get there are differences and we want to be able to celebrate those.’’
