A middle-aged American man was successfully lifted off the Timaru River Track, near Lake Hawea, by the Queenstown based rescue helicopter late this afternoon.

He was reported to be suffering from dehydration, but did not require medical treatment.

A police spokesman said police were alerted to the rescue operation at 2.20pm, after a third party contacted emergency services to say the man needed rescuing.

The man set off on the track about 10am, the spokesman said.

Police were waiting for further updates from Land Search and Rescue, which was leading the rescue operation.
