The seriously injured occupant of a vehicle which hit a stone wall was taken to Dunedin Hospital by rescue helicopter.
The crash blocked the highway for about three hours from 6.40am. Police have given no indication of the cause of the crash.
Two employees at Wanaka Airport suggested the speed limit along the stretch of road should be reduced from 100kmh to 80kmh because of the amount of traffic turning into and out of the airport, the museum and Mt Barker Rd.
A spokeswoman for the NZ Transport Agency said the agency was considering whether to "assess this section of highway for the next round of speed management" but the list was not yet confirmed.
