Business success has been celebrated after an unpredictable year for business owners in Upper Clutha.

More than 200 people attended the Ignite Wanaka Business Excellence Awards at Rippon Hall last weekend.

Winners of the 13 categories were selected by independent panel of judges Wayne Hudson, Ann Lockhart, Charlie James and Meg Taylor.

Mr Hudson said it was good to see a large number of entries, despite lockdowns.

The judges appreciated the honest comments from entrants about how hard the Covid-19 pandemic had been for them and how they were dealing with the impact on their businesses, he said.

Ignite Wanaka chairwoman Jo Learmonth agreed and said it was good to celebrate all that had been achieved.

"The past two years have been particularly challenging and it’s important that we take a moment to celebrate all that we have achieved as a local business community."

Structural and civil engineering firm Batchelar McDougall Consulting won two categories — the supreme business award and outstanding in professional services.

Its win was accredited to its company growth, customer relationships and research and development investments.

Winners of outstanding in each category included Lavender Farm (tourism), Pembroke Patisserie (hospitality), Dunlop Builders (infrastructure/trades), Ocula (retail and employer), WAI Wanaka (not-for-profit), Wild Wire (sustainability and diversification), The Next Chapter (young enterprise), The Film Crew (innovation) and The Village Gift (young enterprise and people’s choice award).
