
His first medals were earned on his first day of competition in the 100m backstroke, with an overall bronze and an age-group (34-39 years) gold medal with a time of 1.07.57.
He followed up on his second day of racing with another age-group gold in the 50m backstroke, setting a personal best of 31.356, which he later improved to 31.50 in the finals, finishing eighth overall.
Stanley was also a member of the Frozen Ferns’ 4 x 50m mixed medley relay team, which was sixth out of 47 teams.
There were 15 athletes from New Zealand competing at the event.
It was the sixth World Ice Swimming Championships. The Otago members also included Emilia Finer (Neptune), Heidi Winter (Alexandra) and Sophie Winter (Alexandra).
Finer set a world record in the 200m individual medley with 2.38.55, shaving more than 1.5sec off the record she set in Alexandra last year.
She won gold in the 100m butterfly and two silver medals in the 250m and 500m freestyle. She also set a age group world record in the 100m freestyle, clocking in at 6.18.08.
Over her four events, Finer swam 1150m and brought home eight medals, according to an Otago Swimming newsletter. — APL
