There has been another setback at the Wanaka Recreation Centre with the completion date for laying artificial turf for hockey and netball delayed until the middle of December.

Last month it was announced Wanaka’s new swimming pool based at the centre would be delayed by about six months.

Queenstown Lakes District sport and recreation manager Simon Battrick said he now expected the turf to be completed by about December 19.

The turf was initially expected to be ready by the start of December.

Unsettled weather and the availability of a turf contractor meant a toilet block and access paths were not quite finished, Mr Battrick said.

The delay was unfortunate, he said.

A public meeting would be held in December at the Lake Wanaka Centre where the council would update people on the situation regarding the recreation centre and other related matters, he said.

The pool was set to be completed in September 2017 but it was likely construction would not finish until December 2017.

There would also be three months of testing before the pool would be allowed to open to the public, which would be some time in March 2018.

Delays were caused by negotiations about pricing and design details between the council and the building contractor, Cook Brothers,  taking longer than expected.

The $13.9million recreation centre was opened in July after almost 10 years of planning and development.
