West Coast-Tasman’s National MP Maureen Pugh announced yesterday she will step away from politics at the general election in November.
‘‘It’s been a huge part of my life but it’s time for me to move on,’’ Mrs Pugh said after nearly 10 years in Parliament.

Mrs Pugh, 67, served several terms as a National Party list MP before wresting the electorate off long-standing Labour MP Damien O’Connor in 2023.

Her decision bookends 28 years of public service.

She first stood as a Northern ward councillor for the Westland District Council in 1998, and later served three terms as Westland mayor until stepping down in 2013.

The election will be held on November 7.
