Snowsports: Pupils dominate secondary school snowsports

Mount Aspiring College ski and snowboard teams made almost a clean sweep of the competition at the recent Otago Southland Secondary School Snowsports Championships, held at Cardrona Skifield, near Wanaka.

Queenstown's Wakitipu High School managed to claim first place in the boys' giant slalom downhill team event despite the Wanaka team's local knowledge.

Mount Aspiring won the girls' grand slalom skiing and snowboarding team event, whilethe boys' snowboarding team also claimed first place and the giant slalom team finished second behind Wakatipu.

St Hildas Collegiate's Frances and Charlotte Newbold took the top two places in the giant slalom individual female race.

Wakitipu High School skiers dominated the boys' giant slalom race securing the top five placings, with Matt Johnson, Gianluca de Cristofaro, and Angus Wilkins climbing the podium.

In the snowboarding events, Mount Aspiring College riders were outstanding as Greta Hewitt, Leah Pihama, and Hayley Scurr sewed up the top three placings in the girls' boardercross.

Ashton Sims and Mac James joined their Wanaka classmates in the boys' boardercross, while Leroy Rust, from Logan Park High School, claimed third.

In the Skier X events, Charlotte Newbold continued her form to win in the girls' event, while Rhys Grimmer, from Wakitipu High School, won the boys competition.
