Bluff Highway is clear again after a car collided with three cows.
A police spokeswoman said officers were called to the scene, on State Highway 1 near the intersection with Nichol Rd, about 8pm yesterday.
"Fortunately, the driver of the car appears to have only sustained minor injuries, however it sounds like at least one of the cows is dead and the others will have to be euthanised."
A spokesman for the NZ Transport Agency said contractors arrived at the scene about 9.10pm after being alerted by emergency services about possible dead stock and several other wandering cows at Ocean Beach, near the intersection with Nichol Rd.
"Our contractors assisted with traffic management and clean-up at the site, and it appears the Invercargill City Council handled the live animal issues."
The cows were off the road, and contractors had finished their work shortly after 9.30pm, he said today.
