Forget the cost of living, the cost of dying is also on the up in the Gore district.

A report presented at yesterday’s Gore District Council meeting revealed costs associated with plots and interment would increase by between 24.8% and 56.3%.

Included among the price rises were single burial plots, which would increase from $1002 to $1250; single interments, which would rise from $1050 to $1500; and double interments, which increase from $1120 to $1750, the report said.

The report noted the district’s cemetery fees across the seven closest lower South Island councils indicated Gore district’s current fees sat below the regional average and would continue to sit within the lower 30% range of local councils once the new fees were introduced.

In comparison, the cost of a standard interment across 16 of the Southland District Council’s 17 cemeteries was $2460.

Invercargill City Council’s standard burial fee was $2220.
