Dearth of jurors leads to trial abandonment

An Invercargill murder trial will not proceed this week after it was abandoned and an insufficient jury pool arrived for re-trial.

Naya Ropiu Fabian Wharekura, 28, was before the High Court at Invercargill defending charges of murdering Chad Terrance Parekura and attempting to murder Austin Jazz McGregor.

On Tuesday, the trial was abandoned just hours into its second day of evidence.

"Several matters that have arisen . . . have led me to the clear and ultimate conclusion that this trial must come to an end," Justice Paul Radich said.

Yesterday, fewer than 30 people showed up for jury service, which created a further delay.

It was hoped that a new trial would begin today with a larger group of potential jurors.

But yesterday afternoon it became clear the matter had to be rescheduled.

Wharekura will next appear on March 12 for a trial review hearing.
