With the assistance of the Bluff Community Bursary, Ms Hoyle recently completed her first year of a bachelor of engineering degree at the University of Auckland, and is once again setting her sights on the water.
"Growing up in Bluff, I was always involved in water-based activities, including swimming, Surf Lifesaving, sea scouts and rowing," she said in a statement.
"All of these activities influenced my course of study, as I move into maritime engineering with a focus on naval architecture this year."
Ms Hoyle was one of six recipients of the Bluff Community Bursary in 2025, which she said provided assistance towards living costs at a hall of residence.
"Moving from the small community of Bluff to the hustle and bustle of the Auckland CBD was a massive change for me. I am very grateful for the support of the bursary in helping with the move," she said.
Alongside her studies, Ms Hoyle continues to regularly volunteer for several causes.
"I remain an active member of the Bluff Volunteer Fire Brigade, and will soon take part in the Spirit of Adventure Trust’s ‘Inspiration Voyage’ for young people with disabilities," she said.
She also recently competed in the Sky Tower Challenge to raise funds for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand, placing second in her race category.
"Moving to the big city has been a real eye-opener and a challenge, but also a chance for me to grow a lot personally," she said.
"It has given me a new perspective on how lucky I am to have grown up with such a strong support network in Bluff."
The Bluff Community Bursary is up to $2000 per annum for three years, for locals who are enrolled in or applying for fulltime study at university or another agreed establishment in New Zealand.
More information about the application process can be found at icc.govt.nz/bluffbursary, and printed application forms can be collected from the Bluff Service Centre during opening hours.
