Books and libraries go together like peas and carrots but Environment Southland has borrowed the concept to offer lifejackets for loan.

The council has teamed up with the Accident Compensation Commission (ACC) to make lifejackets available for those going out on the water this summer.

Lifejackets are available at boat ramps where the harbourmaster team has setup the mobile library, or people can give the team a telephone call to arrange a loan.

Southland deputy harbour master Conrad Evans said it was compulsory in Southland waters to wear lifejackets at all times on vessels of 6m and under, and at times of heightened risk on bigger boats.

"As we know, being on the water comes with risks, so we teamed up with ACC on the lifejacket library initiative."

Southland’s extensive coastline and waterways, made "it a fantastic place for locals and visitors to get out and enjoy all sorts of water activities.

"By offering lifejackets for loan, everyone can access this vital safety gear."

The response had been very positive.

"So far, we’ve loaned out seven lifejackets to a variety of people from a young kayaker who didn’t realise he needed one, to families whose kids had outgrown their old lifejackets, and a seasoned skipper who needed an extra for a visiting family member."

While seven may not seem a lot the team had interacted with hundreds of people in boats who were obeying the lifejacket rules.

"We are extremely impressed and proud of our boating community."

The council is reviewing the Navigation Safety Bylaw.

Anyone who swam, spent time on a boat or simply enjoyed being near the water should check out the proposed changes and give feedback, he said.
