Invercargill will host the second-largest pipe band competition in the world this week.

About 1500 performers and 57 pipe bands from New Zealand and Australia will be competing at the 2025 New Zealand Pipe Band Championships, which begin tomorrow.

As well as the sound of the pipes and drums and the swirl of kilts, Scottish clan organisations will be celebrating and sharing their Scottish and clan heritage.

Seven bands from Southland will be competing for the title, including the ILT City of Invercargill Highland Pipe Band, which is pictured during the Queenstown Pipe Band Championships’ march last weekend.

Local organising committee member Jack King said one of the highlights of the weekend would be the famous street march on Saturday morning, which will wind its way from the water tower down Gala St, showcasing the skill and precision of the competing bands.

"It is an event that nobody should miss," he said.
