School principal Glenn Puna floated the idea of a new playground last year and the PTA obliged, coming up with a $100,000 price tag.
Mr Puna said the former playground was showing its age, with bolts popping out, parts falling off and cables breaking, meaning it had to be closed off to children in fits and starts.
The playground was also well used by the community outside of school hours, so the project would pay dividends, he said.
With the help of 31 sponsors, about 10 grants and a number of fundraisers, the project became more tangible.
Gore Main School PTA president Trudie South said the effort had raised about $120,000.
"That’s a community effort. That’s not just our school . . . that’s massive to be able to get that [funding]," Mr Puna said.
Fundraisers included a New World Gore grocery grab, where three teams scrambled to fill their trolleys in less than a minute and donated the proceeds, an ice cream machine visit and a pizza lunch run by pupils.
Pupils recently saw the design for the new playground for the first time.
"On Friday at assembly, I put the design of the playground up and I left it up there for close to two minutes," Mr Puna said.
It had prompted much cheering.
"We’re very, very excited that we’re at this point, because the hard yards are done," Ms South said.
"There’s obviously hard yards still to come, but it’s the exciting side of it, isn’t it, putting it in and seeing the kids love it."
The playground is being constructed off-site and is due to arrive in three to four months.
The PTA is now thinking about where the previous playground will end up, options including selling it in part or whole and extracting parts of it for scrap metal.
Platinum sponsors of the new playground are Ajax Building Contractors, Grace Legal and McHaffie Building.
