Recycling uptake ‘really positive’

After a five year break, the council says Gore has made a "strong start" to the return of kerbside recycling.

All accepted recyclables, not just glass, were able to be recycled in yellow-top bins in Mataura and Gore from November 3.

A Gore District Council representative said early feedback from the community had been encouraging and more yellow bins were seen on pick-up day than ever before.

What now goes in the bin is clean and flattened paper and cardboard, class one, two and five plastic and empty and rinsed aluminium and steel cans.

Glass jars and bottles, clean, empty and without lids, are still accepted.

The council was to begin bin inspections this week to maintain quality and reduce contamination.

Council sustainability and project lead Craig Sinclair said he was pleased with how well the community has responded to the changeover.

"We’re seeing a really positive response from residents," he said.

"People are keen to do the right thing."
