St Peter’s College had a remarkable showing at the South Island Secondary Schools XC motocross, with individual success and a big team win.

The team of 14 riders travelled with their motorbikes to Akatore, ready for a feat of endurance as they raced around a gruelling pitch.

Although they were competing against one another and the other schools, the weather was another factor, as wet conditions stacked up against them.

A slog through muddy pitch made the race a technical affair for the most part, as riders had to weave and angle through large ditches of mud, although some sections were fast.

Individual accolades and success added up in the end, with Oliver Davie smashing out his age section to come away with the win, and only narrowly missing the overall fastest prize in the process, coming second.

Team manager Russell White, who helped bring the team together for the event, said it was a great start for cross country motorbiking for the school.

"Everyone came pretty well prepared, they made the mindset and wanted the trophy from the start.

"The atmosphere was really cool, we had a matching team set, I just think everyone wanted to ride," he said.

The talent pool for St Peter’s College was already quite high, Mr White said, with a fair bit of experience in competitive cross country and trail rides.

A few training sessions out at the farm helped to get the motor running smoothly and now St Peters College has another trophy, one earned in sweat, oil, and mud.

Mr White and the team thanked their sponsors Pukerau Engineering, Abernethy Contracting & iHire Gore, and HRT Andrews Transport for supporting the team through the race.
