Dora — but not the children’s television character — is visiting Gore.

Dora (Digital On-Road Access) is a 38-year-old bus, converted to a digital classroom in 2012.

The mobile learning centre will be touring Southland, helping people join the growing numbers who are benefiting from having online access to their health records.

The Digital Inclusion Alliance Aotearoa (DIAA) has partnered with WellSouth, Manage My Health, Southern REAP and Rural Women New Zealand to bring Dora to Southland.

Digital Inclusion Alliance Aotearoa operations director Laurence Zwimpfer said the main goal for the visit was to give Southland communities the chance to learn about the benefits of having online access to their health records, as well as to get any help with their digital tech.

"Online health services are available to anyone with a smartphone, tablet or computer and internet connection. The trainers on Dora can also help you find an affordable internet connection, if this is a problem.

"For example, hundreds of people in Southland already benefit from the low-cost Skinny Jump internet service," he said.

Some patients can order repeat prescriptions online, as well as book appointments.

This helped reduce GP workload on administrative tasks, freeing them up to provide more patient care.

WellSouth CEO Andrew Swanson-Dobbs said it was great to see so many general practices supporting the work.

"Like many industries, health is adopting technology to make the flow of information easier, but we don’t want to leave people behind. This is a great opportunity for Southlanders to get help accessing their health information online."

People who are interested in getting help with online health services can visit Dora between 10am-4pm when it is in their area.

No booking is needed.

 - Dora will be parked at Gore Health Centre, Birch Lane on April 3, Gore Medical Centre, Eccles St, April 4 and 1st Gore Scouts, Eccles St, April 5.
