Athletics: Brisbane meet for OGHS relay team

The star-studded Otago Girls' High School relay team will test itself in international athletics for the first time in Brisbane later this week.

The 4 x 100m relay team of Sydney Evans-Tobata, Brigid O'Neill, Alex Lesa and Emma Ward won a bronze medal in the girls under-14 race at the New Zealand secondary schools championships in Dunedin last December.

The team then stepped up a notch to win the gold medal at the South Island secondary schools championships in Invercargill in March.

The school is also sending a 4 x 400m relay team to the three-day Downunder championships that start in Brisbane on Friday against teams from the United States and Australia.

Evans-Tobata and O'Neill are doubling up and will be joined in the 400m relay by Anna Cross and Alana Close.

The athletes will also compete in their specialist individual events.

Rebekah Greene (Hill City-University) set an Otago senior women's 1500m record of 4min 18.15sec when she finished seventh in the British Milers Club meeting at Watford, England, last weekend. It was 0.75sec faster than the record she set in 2010.

A week earlier, Greene finished second in the 1500m at the St Mary's Ivy League meeting at Twickenham, London, in 4min 25.86sec.
