Shireen Crumpton completed a hat-trick of Otago long-distance titles at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday.

The 46-year-old, who had already notched the 10,000m and 5000m titles this season, added the women's 3000m title on the first day of the Otago track and field championships.

Just like in the 10,000m and 5000m, Ariki's Hanna English (18) was her prime challenger, but Crumpton showed she still has life in her legs to win in 10min 36.93sec. English was second in 10min 41.07sec, while Bella Bloomfield (24) was third in 10min 57.02sec.

Oli Chignell (18), who won the men's Otago 5000m title last weekend, also added the 3000m title to his name on Saturday. The Hill City-University runner had a cracking battle with Jack Beaumont (19), of Winton, but came out on top in a personal-best 8min 43.12sec. Beaumont crossed the line in 8min 44.59sec.

Andrew Whyte (23), who is striving to qualify for the Rio Olympics in the 400m, showed he is also a classy 800m runner. The Hill-City University athlete has hinted he could switch to the 800m in a couple of years, and proved it might not be a bad idea.

Despite a lack of experience over the two-lap distance, he won in 1min 53.02sec, the 10th-fastest time recorded by a New Zealand athlete this year. Samuel Bremer (21), of Hill City University, was second in 1min 56.46, while clubmate Jared Monk (20) was third in 1min 57.53sec.

Joccoaa Palmer (17), of Taieri, got the better of Ellie Duncan (16), of Hill City-University, in the women's under-18 200m. Palmer, who won the preliminary race in 26.61sec to qualify for the final, went 0.14sec faster in the decider to win the Otago title.

Bryn McLeod-Jones (22) had a busy day in the field, winning the men's senior javelin and finishing second in the hammer throw and discus.

The Hill City-University athlete won the javelin with a personal-best 52.05m heave, a distance he achieved with his sixth and final attempt. Rory McSweeney (31), of Taieri, was second with a 49.06m effort.

McLeod-Jones came off second-best to younger brother Hugh (18) in the senior men's discus, while Todd Bates (22), of Taieri, got the better of him in the senior men's hammer throw. Taieri athlete Felix McDonald also had a good day.

He won the men's under-20 100m (11.74sec), long jump (6.53m) and 200m (23.27sec).

He was second across the line in the 200m, but Jake Paul, of Wellington, was not eligible to win the title, despite stopping the clock in 22.90sec. The annual meet was the first of three big meets at the Caledonian over a three-week span.

The national masters track and field championships will be held at the ground this weekend, while the three-day-long national championships will start Friday week.
