Early training in gymnastics has given Rebekah Greene the fitness and agility she used to lead her St Hildas cross-country team to a silver medal last weekend.

Greene finished seventh in the 3km junior girls race at the New Zealand secondary schools cross-country championships on rolling farmland in New Plymouth in 11min 35sec.

The St Hildas team won silver medals in both the three-person and six-person events in a field of 209 runners.

The other outstanding performance came from talented Otago junior swimmer Phoebe O'Leary, who finished 12th in 11min 49sec.

Caitlin O'Brien, who finished 35th in 12min 24sec, completed the three-person team.

These three were joined by Olivia Hay (46th), Frances Fulton (48th) and top swimmer Stefannie Gillespie (79th) in the silver medal winning six-person team.

Greene, a member of the Southern Gymnastics Academy, is used to the pressure of sport at the national level through her involvement in gymnastics.

Three years ago, she won a gold medal in the level 6 vault at the New Zealand gymnastics championships in Manukau.

That was a good year for Greene, who also won gold medals on the bar at the Wellington championships and was the overall winner in grade six at the Canterbury championships.

The St Hildas senior girls team finished seventh in the three-person event in New Plymouth.

Amelia Kinnaird was 21st, Sarah McLaren (30th) and Laura Mackay 61st.

The best boys performance locally came from New Zealand secondary schools representative Campbell Garry (John McGlashan), who was 10th in the senior boys 6km race in 20min 27sec.

Daniel Balchin (Kings) was 18th in 20min 45sec.

Toby Batchelor (John McGlashan) was 27th in the junior boys 4km race in 14min 29sec and Jaydon Dovey (Kings) 20th in the year nine event in 10min 59sec.
