Athletics: Otago six named in NZ team

Dunedin physical education student Roseanne Robinson (Hill City) is one of six Otago athletes named in the New Zealand team for the Oceania championships in Cairns in September.

Robinson (19), the New Zealand junior champion, has been selected in the women's 10km race walk.

The other Otago athletes named in the team are Marshall Hall (Taieri) discus, Daniel O'Shea (Hill City) 400m, 400m hurdles, relay, Jerram Huston (Taieri) shot put, Alexandra Skerten (Taieri) under-20 400m hurdles, Lauren Wilson (Hill City) under-20 100m, 200m and relay.

Robinson's best time for the 10km walk is the 50min 30sec she recorded when winning the New Zealand women's 19 grade title in Christchurch in March.

She also won the 3km track title.

Robinson finished seventh in the women's open event over 20km when she made her international debut at a transtasman event in Hobart in February.

She was the third under-23 walker to complete the course.

Wilson (17), a year 13 pupil at Queen's High School, is a member of Brent Ward's sprint squad.

Her potential was first identified and fostered by former Australian coach Jim Baird when she joined his squad at the age of 12.

She won bronze medals in the 100m and 200m at the New Zealand secondary school championships in Timaru in December and gold medals in the women's 19 grade at the New Zealand club championships in Christchurch in March. Hall (21), a University of Otago student, recorded eight of the 10 best throws on the New Zealand ranking list last season.

His best performance was the 51.39m he threw at the Sydney Track Classic in February.

He retained his national discus title on Christchurch.

O'Shea (21), an accounting student at Otago, won his first national title in the senior men's 400m hurdles in Christchurch in 53.43sec.

He reduced his time to 52.29sec when finishing sixth at the Australian championships in Perth.

Huston (25) has a best shot put of 15.29m, which he achieved when finishing seventh at the Australian championships in Perth.

Skerten (18) has a best time for the 400m hurdles of 64.45sec, which she ran when finishing fifth at the New Zealand championships.

• Dunedin student Hannah Newbould ran 9min 15.68sec when finishing sixth in the women's 3000m on the first day of the world junior athletics championships in Moncton, Canada on Monday.

It was a personal-best time by nine seconds.

Dunedin's Rebekah Greene won the feature 1500m in 4min 28.92sec at the Trevor Craven Memorial meeting in Vancouver.

Greene won the award for being the outstanding high school athlete at the meeting.
