Liz Wilson's expectations are high - she is chasing medals at the world masters athletics championships in Brazil.

She is one of 4000 athletes competing at the championships starting in Porto Alegre on Wednesday.

Wilson (50), a preschool teacher at Montessori School in Dunedin, is ranked in the top three in the 100m, 200m and 400m sprints in the women's aged 50 to 54 grade.

''I feel I'm ready for it,'' Wilson said.

''The training has gone well and I've had a good winter. My events are well spread out over the two weeks and I'm positive about it.''

Her coach, Brent Ward, is also confident.

''Liz is a top competitor and relishes big-time meetings,'' he said.

''She has the self-belief and is capable of running fast times in good company.''

This will be the first time Wilson has competed at the world championships but it is not her first international experience.

She won five gold medals in the age 45 to 49 grade at the Oceania championships in Tauranga two years ago. She won the 60m, 100m, 200m, 400m and the long jump.

Wilson followed her daughter, Lauren, into athletics seven years ago, at the age of 43, and has never looked back.

She has relished the chance to train with the younger athletes in Ward's sprint squad.

Wilson has broken numerous Otago masters records and has lost count of the number of New Zealand masters titles she has won.

Wilson is travelling to Brazil with husband Murray, one of Dunedin's top bowlers. He has won two Bowls Dunedin titles and two national sevens titles with the Fairfield club.

Murray will be manager for his wife during the world championships in Brazil.
