Otago officials will be keen to emulate the recent deeds of the Otago competitors when the New Zealand track and field championships are held in Dunedin next year.

Otago athletes won 40 medals - 17 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze - when the championships were held in Christchurch in March.

The officials will be keen to perform as well when the championships are held at the Caledonian Ground on March 25-27 next year.

It will be a double bonanza for Otago athletics because the South Island Colgate Games (for children aged 7 to 14) are also being held in Dunedin on January 14-16 next year.

"It will be a huge benefit to the city having two major events held within a two-month period," Otago selector Raylene Bates said.

Likely to compete in Dunedin will be Olympic champion shot putter Valerie Vili, former world champion discus thrower Beatrice Faumuina and Commonwealth Games javelin thrower Stuart Farquhar who threw 85.35m at the Porritt Classic this year.

It is also possible Olympic Games silver medallist Nick Willis will compete in Dunedin.

Faumuina threw the discus 63.40m to win her 10th New Zealand senior women's title when the championships were last held in Dunedin in 2003.

"It is a huge undertaking organising an event like this," Bates said.

"Athletics has a high profile locally and on the national level at the moment."

When the Colgate Games were last held in Dunedin in 2001, 750 athletes competed, 500 of them coming from outside the city.

With parent and family support, the number of visitors was boosted to 2000.

The South Island and North Island Colgate Games are held annually at different venues in New Zealand.

Athletics New Zealand children's organisers decided years ago not to publish results of the younger age-groups at the Colgate Games, but from the age of 10 it is all on and place-getters and their performances are made public.

Many of Otago's future elite athletes had their first blooding in representative athletics at the Colgate Games.

Former Commonwealth Games high jump gold medallist Tania Murray, former Olympian Chris Donaldson, Athletics Otago's record steward Deidre Helm and Bates competed in children's athletics.

They started young and have continued to make a contribution to the sport.

Murray is sports co-ordinator at Cromwell College and is training young high jumpers, Donaldson is an exercise consultant with the New Zealand Academy of Sport and Bates was manager of the New Zealand athletics team at the Beijing Olympic Games.

Dunedin City Council sport fields facilities officer Harold Driver has given special events status to both events and has agreed to certain additions to the Caledonian Ground.

"There will be warm-up facilities provided for the throwers near the cricket nets, the call up tent will be on the rugby field and special car park facilities will be on Logan Park near the tennis courts," Bates said.
