Record tumbles in men’s 4x100m relay

A blistering performance resulted in more than half a second being taken off the Otago men’s 14 grade 4x100m relay record on Saturday.

The Hill City University B team of Liam Kerr, Duncan Trevithick, Peter Sewell and Cameron Moffitt ran 46.97sec at the Caledonian Ground.

That comfortably beat the old record of 47.58sec, set by a Hill City team in 2010.

It was also a winning performance on the day, as the team beat the older Hill City University A team, which ran 47.20sec.

It was Trevithick’s  second win of the day, having also claimed first in the men’s 200m in 23.52sec, beating Taieri’s Flynn Murdoch who ran 23.69sec.

He had his hands full in a handy 100m field though, that race being  won by Christchurch’s James Sandilands in 11.25sec.

Schuyler Orr, of North Otago, was the fastest of the local athletes in 11.44sec.

Orr got one back in the 60m, claiming victory in 7.26sec.

The highly ranked Fiona Morrison, of Christchurch, ran 12.60sec to be the fastest woman in the 100m before winning the 100m hurdles in 14.48sec.

Taieri’s Joccoaa Palmer edged Christchurch’s Jordyn Blake by 0.02sec to win the women’s 200m in 26.93sec.

Caitlin O’Donnell and Sam Gouverneur won the women’s and men’s 800m in 2min 36.75sec and 2min 00.43sec respectively.

Meanwhile, in the 3000m, Hill City University’s Rebekah Greene, who has spent recent years running in the  United States, made a return to the Dunedin scene with a resounding win.

She ran 9min 46.52sec to win by over a minute, while Nathan Hill won the men’s race in 9min 00.62sec.Cameron Miller jumped 6.14m to claim a comfortable win in the men’s long jump.

Brigid Corson won the women’s event with 4.84m.Hugh McLeod-Jones and Hamish Mears impressed to win their respective grades in the discus, throwing 44.33m and 43.69m.

Zharna Beattie threw 34.12 to win the women’s discus.Todd Bates won the senior men’s hammer with 49.57m, while McLeod-Jones won the under-20 event with 47.82m.

McLeod-Jones was also the best of the shot put throwers, winning the men’s event with 14.18m, while Tara McNally was the best of the women with 9.84m.

Moffitt showed his versatility, picking up wins in his age-grade in the shot put, javelin, 100m hurdles and 200m hurdles.
