Basketball: Faith shown in franchise

The Otago Nuggets can breathe a little easier after one of their major sponsors showed faith in the struggling franchise.

The Nuggets' future in the National Basketball League remains dependent on the franchise securing enough funding to support a campaign in 2009.

Basketball Otago chief executive Mark Rogers has acknowledged it will be a tough task in the current economic environment.

But Cartridge World Dunedin director Graeme Cochrane gave the franchise hope yesterday when he confirmed the Dunedin company would continue to sponsor the Nuggets whether or not the national group continued as the team's major naming sponsor.

"We want to continue some form of a partnership with them. Whether that is at the naming rights level or not will be determined over the course of the next few weeks."

The Dunedin franchise is one of 34 operating under the Cartridge World New Zealand umbrella which pays into a sponsorship fund.

Part of that fund was used to secure the naming rights for the Otago Nuggets during the past two seasons.

The Cartridge World group will met to consider its involvement in the next few weeks.

"It is just a matter of working through a few things over the next few weeks to see where we end up," Cochrane said.
