Basketball: High scores all round for winners

Week 10 of the men's senior basketball competition was all about sharing.

The three winning teams combined to have 15 players in double-figures in a round which included several Nuggets squad members.

An OBHS side stacked with Sam King and Tom Rowe hardly left third gear in accounting for the undermanned Magic 83-63, to improve its record to 9-1.

The competition leader simply had too much firepower for the Magic, which was without key scorer Andrew Wheeler, and its entire first choice front-line.

Ethan Carruthers' 20 points came mostly from a limited number of jump-shots in rhythm, while Luke Aston, Rowe and King all scored in the late teens.

Mitch McRae again top-scored for the Magic with 22 points, but started off ice-cold and had only 11 after three quarters with his side down by 22.

Ricki Buckrell's impressive variety of post moves yielded 16 points, and he could well prosper with more touches in the low block or isolated on the wing.

The Falcons continued their surge up the ladder, winning their fourth straight contest while handing the Bombers their second loss in seven days.

They had five players score in double-digits and a clear rebounding advantage against the Bombers, whose hold on second spot looks increasingly tenuous.

Steve Robinson had a game-high 23 points for the losing side, and Elton Cotton added 16, despite sitting early after a couple of quick fouls.

It was a case of right place, wrong time for the Comets. They ran into the now 3-7 Saints on the wrong day and had no answer for the returning James Ross, who limited himself to 19 points, by finding open team-mates countless times for easy buckets.

Cain Falconer, Lewis Barclay, Markham Brown, Damon Cleverley and Tom Tindale all joined Ross in double -figures as the pieces clicked seamlessly back into position for the 105-63 win.

Adam Beissel tried hardest for the Comets, compiling 24 efficient points, but regularly found himself defending alone in transition after the Saints incessant ball pressure stripped his side of possession.

The results give OBHS a three-game lead over the Bombers, now hotly pursued by the Falcons and Magic in joint third, one game back.

The Saints' win consigned the Comets to sole possession of last place with a 2-8 record.
