Two OBHS teams in final

Otago Boys' High School has continued its dominance of Dunedin secondary school basketball after winning both semifinals of the boys' competition on Friday.

Its two teams, the Blues and Whites, will meet in next week's final, while St Hilda's Collegiate and Otago Girls' High School will play for the girls' title.

Otago Boys' Blue were made to work hard by King's High School, but emerged with a thrilling 92-80 overtime win.

There was little between the teams most of the way, but Otago Boys' were dominant throughout the extra period.

They scored three quick baskets to start overtime, taking the score to 82-76 and gaining the upperhand.

King's continued to battle, before a Levi Cockroft three-pointer extended the margin again.

He finished as Otago Boys' leading scorer, with 24, while Hunter Kindley had 20.

Olly McCombie was a beast all night for King's, scoring 25 points as he proved difficult to stop getting to the hoop.

Earlier it had been an even start, before Otago Boys' began to gain some dominance through the second quarter.

King's were able to weather the storm though and came back to trail by just one at halftime, with the score at 41-40.

They took the lead in the third, before a tense fourth quarter saw the teams unable to be split.

In the earlier semifinal Otago Boys' White claimed a dominant 93-58 win over Waitaki Boys' High School.

Ben Reeves top-scored with 19, while it saw several others reach double-figures to crush the Oamaru school.

Otago Boys' put their foot down early, leading 22-11 at the end of the first quarter, before extending that to 40-19 at halftime.

In the girls' semifinals St Hilda's Collegiate continued their dominance of the recent era with an 85-50 win over Columba College.

Nicole Ruske had 24 points for St Hilda's, while Laura Taylor and Olivia O'Neill had 17 and 16 each.

Millie Nesbit led the way for Columba with 24.

St Hilda's led 20-8 at the end of the first quarter and maintained similar dominance as they extended their lead throughout.

In the other semifinal Otago Girls' High School Blue pipped Kavanagh College 57-55.

Maddy Campbell had 19 points and Becky Paterson had 18, as Otago Girls' held on to take the win.

Kavanagh took an 18-17 lead to the first break, before Otago Girls' fought back to lead 32-28 at halftime.

That lead was cut to two going into the final quarter, but Otago Girls' was able to hold on for the win.

Dre Whaanga top-scored for Kavanagh with 16, while Anita Samasoni had 15.
