U15 championships a glimpse of the future

The under-15 national basketball championships begin in Dunedin today.

There are 19 boys' teams and 18 girls' teams at the Edgar Centre, each competition being broken into four pools.

Games begin at 9am and run throughout the day, before the final game of the day tips off at 7.30pm.

Otago is in action at 9am and 2.15pm on court one against Hawke's Bay and Tasman in the boys' competition.

In the girls' section, Otago begins against Mid-South Canterbury at 12.30pm, also on court one, before playing Waitakere West at 5.45pm.

That girls' team looks to be a contender for the title. It won the under-13 southern regional tournament two years ago.

The boys finished second in their tournament the same year.

This tournament represents the first time these players have competed as top-age players at a national championships.

The finals will be played on Saturday: the girls are set for 3.15pm and the boys for 5pm.

With New Zealand increasingly producing top young talent, the tournament will be a chance to see the best of the next generation of Kiwi basketballers.

Last year's tournament winners were Wellington in the boys and Harbour A in the girls.
