The national record for centre titles is held by former New Zealand representative David File (Gisborne), who has won 62.
Clements (63), the owner of a variety store, does not believe there is any secret to his success.
"It's just persistence," he said. "I have had a lot of good bowlers with me who put their heart and soul into it."
Bowls success is a family affair because his partner, Linley O'Callaghan, has won 25 Central Otago titles.
Clements added three titles to his collection last season but does not think he will reach the magical 100 titles.
"I have purchased a boat and will take up a bit of fishing as a sideline," he said. "I intend to back off a bit now.
"I have too many aches and pains. I have sore shoulders, two sore knees and gout in the finger of my bowling hand."
Clements started playing bowls in 1981. He first represented Central Otago in 1983 after just two years of bowls and was in the local sevens team in his fourth year.
He proved he was a natural from the start by winning the Central Otago open singles in his second and third years against Tom Rutherford, who represented the South Island and won the New Zealand champion of champions singles title in 1983.
Clements has always been in control and has won all his team titles from the skip position.
The bowler he admired most was former New Zealand representative Kevin Darling.
"He was the most natural bowler I've come across in New Zealand," Clements said.
"He was one of the bowlers I idolised as a young fellow."
Clements demonstrated his class by reaching the quarterfinals of the Speight's Invitation singles at the North East Valley green on Sunday.
He was beaten 25-11 by Shannon McIlroy (Nelson), who went on to win the title for the third time.
Clements had not played for six months and had only two 30-minute practices before coming to Dunedin.
"It went OK at times but I was a bit rusty in the middle of the quarterfinal," he said.
His best performance in the tournament was in 2009 when he finished runner-up to New Zealand representative Shaun Scott (North East Valley).
Clements likes to practise on his own and never uses a jack.
"I just try and get line-and-length rhythm going," he said.
"If you practise with a kitty, you teach yourself to be an inconsistent bowler. If you get a good one, you should be able to put another three with it."
Clements started playing bowls in 1981.
"I had a 10-acre [4ha] block and used to run a few turkeys," he said. "I got sick of working seven days a week so I decided to try out bowls."
There was an advertisement in the paper from the Clyde club calling for new members.
"I went down to Clyde, was made welcome, and joined up," he said. He joined the Alexandra club 10 years later.
