The women's four hopes to break the Gisborne club's duck in the Pathways national championships in Dunedin today.
The Gisborne four of Janet Munns, Judy Taylor, Lyn Trueman and Ronne Crone was unbeaten after three of the five rounds at the Westpac Bowls Stadium today.
It beat Massey Avenue (Wellington) 18-14, St Clair (Dunedin) 14-12 and Omanu (Bay of Plenty) 14-11.
Gisborne has never won a national Pathways title and all the team members are playing in Dunedin for the first time.
Munns was an accurate lead and put the front bowls close to the jack throughout the three games.
The most courageous player was Taylor, who uses a lifter to pick up her bowls after serious back surgery 25 years ago.
Gisborne had a 11-4 lead over Omanu in its third game but the Bay of Plenty team came back into the picture with a five on the next end to trail by just two shots.
However, the Gisborne players regained their composure by scoring a one and two on the next two ends to make the game safe.
The Dunsandel four of Karolyn Boon, Pam Clarke, Serena Matthews and Sandra Keith is the other unbeaten team and will play Gisborne in the first round this morning.
Keith, Matthews and Boon were in the Leeston triples team that won the title two years ago.
Keith, one of the unlucky players to miss selection for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, has a point to prove today.
Dunsandel had a struggle before beating St Clair 14-12 in its last game of the day. It was an accurate upshot by Matthews that stopped St Clair getting the four it needed on the last end to win the game.
The St Clair team of Sharon McCaw, Gaynor Moss, Carolyn Crawford and Trish Marr started with a flurry with a four on the first end and led 8-1 after five of the 15 ends.
But Keith is a master tactician and her skills brought Dunsandel back into the game with a four on the next end.
It scored two shots on the eighth, ninth and 11th ends to lead 11-10. A two on the penultimate end made it difficult for St Clair to close the gap.
The Browns Bay team of Brian Wilson, Colin Rogan, John Walker and Neil Fisher is the favourite in the men's fours after getting three easy wins.
It beat West End (Taranaki) 18-5, Palmerston North 20-6 and Motueka 26-8.
It is a polished team and it will be difficult for the Waihola (South Otago) four of Lui Gunderson, Neil Walker, David Robinson and Brendon Hollander to topple it in the fifth round today.
Waihola remained unbeaten with wins against Motueka 15-14 and West End (Taranaki) 15-12 in its two games. It had a bye in the third round.
