Forbury Park defeated in final of club 7s

Forbury Park lost the final but the pair of Malia Tavite and Lesley Dabinett came up trumps.

The strong Allenton team from Mid Canterbury beat Forbury Park 2-1 (singles 21-6, pairs 10-19, fours 17-11) to win the women's division 2 interclub sevens in Auckland at the weekend.

The Forbury Park pair narrowly lost their first game in section play 11-12 to the Bay of Plenty pair from the Ohope club.

But they won their next five games, including the three post-section games.

They beat the Alexandra pair of Alison Allison and Jill Hanning 21-8 in the quarterfinals, Wanganui 14-8 in the semifinals and Serena Matthews and Sandra Holdom in the final of their pool.

This last game was significant because Matthews won the New Zealand open pairs title in 2013.

Carolyn West lost the singles to former Black Jack Sandra Keith 21-10 and the Forbury Park four of Gloria Munro, Elenor Dickson, Jill O'Gorman and Grace Smith was beaten 17-11.

West also lost her quarterfinals singles to Sue Helm (Alexandra) 21-18.

But Forbury Park won the pair and the four edged Alexandra's Evelyn Martin, Raelene Cavanagh, Yvonne McCutcheon and Judith Clark 13-12.

Division 2 is not an inferior competition to division 1 and this was highlighted by the strength of the Sumner club (Christchurch) that won the men's competition.

The club's singles player was double World Bowls champion Gary Lawson.

The team also included former Black Jack Shayne Sincock and experienced intercentre sevens representative Roger Glendinning.

In the quarterfinals, Lawson was forced to produce his best form to beat Kaitangata singles player Graeme Hislop 21-16.

The Kaitangata pair of Neville Twaddle and John Taylor were beaten 22-8 and the four of Stu Uren, Mark Twaddle, Bill Marshall and Chuck Littlejohn 16-8.

In the semifinal against Forbury Park, Lawson beat Nick Sinclair 21-4, the Sumner pair defeated Glen Murtagh and Ross Munro 18-3 and the four downed Steve Wilson, Brendan Legg, former Otago rugby representative Dave Callon and Gordy Davis 11-4.

In the final, Sumner beat West End (Taranaki) 21-18 in the singles, drew 18-18 in the pairs and won the fours 18-10.

Eastbourne (Wellington), with former Black Jacks Jamie Hill, Philip Skoglund and Justin Goodwin in its team, won the men's division one when it beat Stoke (Nelson) 2-1 (singles 9-21, pairs 19-13 and fours 15-9). The Stoke singles player was World Bowls champion Shannon McIlroy.

The women's division 1 title was won by Hinuera (Waikato) which beat Victoria (Wellington) 21-4 in the singles and 19-12 in the pairs but lost the fours 10-14.
