They are Dunedin brothers in arms and on Saturday went to battle in the final of the Dunedin Centre men's champion of champions pairs at the Kaikorai Bowling Club.

In a rare occurrence for an open sporting final, two pairs of brothers went head to head to contest the silverware.

Brighton Bowling Club players Cam (25) and Mitch (27) Cook took on Kaikorai's Howell brothers, Callum (23) and Jonty (20).

The contest also illustrated the growing respect from the larger clubs in the Dunedin region for the playing strength within the smaller Brighton Bowling Club.

Despite unsettled preparation, the experience and cool heads of the Howell brothers came through for a 20-13 victory.

Callum was made redundant at Christmas and has since been working in Christchurch, forcing a weekly trip south for competition with his brother and the Kaikorai Club.

However, in winning his first centre title, Callum, who played skip, was able to reap reward from the hours of travel.

"It was challenging in the wind," he said.

Jonty, an electrician who claimed his third centre title as a result of the win, said they had not played the Cook brothers before and did not know how they played.

"So it was just a matter of getting on with doing our thing. We had a few sloppy ends and dropped a few points. It's not ideal. But we hung in there."

"There was a couple of near misses, and that could have swung the game quite dramatically.

"It was really just as case of getting numbers on the head."

For first-year bowlers, Cam and Mitch Cook's progress through to a centre final augurs well.

"We picked up that five. It was looking all right, but it was pretty tough," Cam said.

As is the case with the Horwell brothers, again it is the younger brother stealing the glory, Cam winning four Brighton Club titles this year to Mitch's one.

Finals of the Centre champion of champion triples were also played over the weekend resulting in a Taieri club double.

The Taieri three of Barbara Archer, Vicki Graf and Jenny Dyhrberg survived a late charge to defeat the the Outram team of Marion Hambleton, Mary Stevenson and Isobel Sharp 15-13.

The race for the men's title was another cliffhanger between North East Valley's Terry Scott, Evan Roberts and Keanu Darby and Taieri's Michael Wood, Malcolm Wilson and Dave Mercer, the Taieri trio winning the open men's title on an extra end 18-17.
