Otago indoor bowlers Alanna Preddy and Daniel French beat their North Island opponents but the South Island indoor bowls team failed at the annual inter-island match in Christchurch on Saturday.
The annual event was first held in 1980 and the South Island’s only win this century was in 2003.
The North Island gained its 13th successive win when the South Island was beaten 31-17.
There are eight disciplines in the competition and the South Island won only two.
Balclutha-based Preddy (22), who has won four South Otago titles, was in the South Island women’s fours team that won their three games 20-9, 16-13 and 18-14.
The other members of the team were Suzanne Mackie (Southland) and Canterbury’s Marie-Therese Hooper and Deanne Osborne.
Dunedin-based painter Daniel French was a key member of the South Island men’s fours team that also won its three games 24-12, 20-11 and 26-7.
He was joined in the team by Ashburton bowlers Simon Thomas, Michael Lawson and Grant Wilson.
French (31), who won his 20th centre title last month, is Otago’s top indoor male bowler.
Robert Wilson (South Otago) was a member of the men’s triples team that won one of its three games.
The North Island was unbeaten in its nine-match tour of the South Island.
