Outram men take turn in the limelight

Women have been dominant at the Outram Bowling Club for the past decade, but the male members claimed the limelight for themselves last Sunday.

The team of Rex Calder (singles), Paul McLeod and Philip Stevenson (pairs) and Roger West, Neville Stevenson, Roger Cameron and Rob Scouler (fours) won its first major event.

Outram won the Dunedin final of the division two interclub sevens and will represent the centre at the regional final in Oamaru next month.

Outram won with four points (+13) ahead of Port Chalmers with two points (-13) and Tainui two points (-21).

The win meant a lot to Cameron, the club president.

"We normally take a back seat to the women," he said. "It was great to get it together last weekend.

"It was not a fluke. We deserved to win because we played consistently against clubs that have a bigger membership than us."

Cameron, who claims Irish heritage, grew up in London and played football for Wimbledon in the late 1950s.

He then immigrated to New Zealand to play professional football for Papatoetoe in Auckland before transferring to Dunedin City. He then played for Dunedin Technical until he retired at the age of 42.

This win continued the impressive record of the Outram club this season.

Calder won his first centre title when he won the Bowls Dunedin mixed pairs with Sue Hodges at the beginning of the season.

It gave Hodges a bar to her gold star and she won her 11th title in the triples with Cindi Ewart and Mary Stevenson.

That win gave Ewart her 10th title and bar for her gold star and Stevenson her fifth title and gold star.

The men's division one competition was won by Fairfield, the women's division one by Taieri and the women's division two by Logan Park.
