Green Island captain Dion Lobb will round out an impressive club career with one last hurrah for the Swamp Rats.

The veteran right-arm seamer has been an integral member of the squad for more than 20 years but plans to retire at the end of next week.

He will be joined on the sidelines by another veteran, in wicketkeeper-batsman Ant Harris.

The pair will get an opportunity to go out on a high. Green Island will contest the national club championship finals for the first time in 11 years.

"It is extra motivation but I'm just going to try to enjoy [the trip and the environment]," Lobb said.

"I'm sure Ants will be doing the same. But I guess when you retire from Green Island you never really retire.

"I might fill in for third or second grade here and there and I'll still be floating around supporting the boys and wanting them to do well."

Lobb said Green Island qualified for the tournament nine years in a row and had won or shared in the national title five times. But it had not qualified for the finals since 2008.

That fact has been gnawing away at Lobb and the likes of Harris and fellow stalwart Mark Joyce, who was named club cricketer of the year at this week's Dunedin Cricket Association awards.

The team decided to make a concerted push to get back to the finals this season. It prioritise the regional knockout games on Sunday and beat Taieri in the Otago final to secure its spot.

"It is probably the strongest side I've been away with, perhaps. It is hard to remember back 20 years but it is pretty strong.

"Our Volts players have made themselves available which helps the depth."

Green Island has typically had quality bowling line-ups but its batting has been impressive this season.

The likes of Harris, Brad Kneebone, Geordie Scott and Joyce have all played some match-winning knocks.

Volts all-rounder Christi Viljoen is a clever bowler and his variations will be invaluable once the pitches start to tire after a few days of cricket at Cornwall Park in Auckland.

Lobb has taken more than 800 wickets for Green Island during his lengthy career, and will share the new-ball bowling responsibilities with former Otago left-armer Blair Soper. They have been a effect duo for the club.

Green Island's opening game is against Parnell on Tuesday.

The tournament involves the best six club teams from the major associations playing each other in a round robin from Tuesday to Saturday.

The top two teams play in Sunday's final.
