Former Otago batsman Jonathan Trott is back in New Zealand and would love to return for another season with the Volts.

The South African-born England A player spent the summer of 2005-06 playing for Otago and made a big impression.

In the one-day competition he was outstanding, plundering 455 runs at the Bradman-like average of 91.

He was the second-leading scorer, trailing Ross Taylor, who scored 603 runs at 67.

He also had the knack of picking up wickets that season with what is probably best described as a golden arm.

The medium pacer claimed 14 victims at 19.85.

He was fortunate to pick up some of those wickets but he created a lot of his own luck with an aggressive approach.

His efforts were rewarded at the New Zealand Cricket awards where he won the State Medal as the best domestic cricketer.

Understandably, Otago has been keen for him to return and Trott is equally enthusiastic.

"I was going to come back last season but I got selected in the England A side and had to pull out, unfortunately," he said.

"It would be brilliant and I'd love to come back."

In June 2008, Trott was called into the England twenty/20 side and played two matches against the West Indies.

He missed out, scoring nine runs in two innings, but has remained in contention and is touring New Zealand with England A.

In the first of five matches against New Zealand A, Trott scored 138 and 75 on a flat deck in Queenstown earlier this week.

Cracking the England side remains his No 1 goal.

If he does that, the chances of seeing him play for Otago again would seem remote.

But while he remains on the fringe, there is every chance he could return.

Trott will be action for England A in its first-class match with New Zealand A at Lincoln, beginning today.
