The wet Dunedin weather spoiled Otago’s victory hopes against an under-strength Northern Districts yesterday and led it to drop out of the final places.
The one-day match between the two sides was abandoned yesterday at the University of Otago Oval without a ball being bowled.
The rain started early in Dunedin and although it stopped occasionally, getting the game under way was never an option.
With the abandonment, Otago went up to 15 points but is now fourth after it was passed by Wellington, which beat Canterbury on Saturday and moved up to 16 points. Canterbury and Auckland are further ahead.
Auckland skipped clear at the top of the table, beating Central Districts by four wickets at New Plymouth yesterday. All teams have played eight games so have two games left to play.
Otago will face Canterbury in Christchurch on Wednesday and then host table-topping Auckland on Sunday. Northern Districts is just one point behind Otago.
