Strong start from NZ

The Black Caps made a strong start against Bangladesh last evening after losing the toss and being asked to bowl by the home side in the second test at Dhaka.

New Zealand needs to win the test to square the series and prevent a first test series loss to Bangladesh.

Their search for a win got off to a good start when on a pitch already taking turn on day one, they had reduced Bangladesh to 149 for eight at tea.

Wickets were shared among the spinners; Ajaz Patel picked up two for 54, part-timer Glenn Phillips two for 21 and Mitchell Santner bowled well on his return to test cricket to claim three for 54.

The New Zealanders also benefited from an unusual dismissal when Mushfiqur Rahim, who was on 35, played a backfoot defensive shot to the bowling of Kyle Jamieson and then instinctively knocked the bouncing ball — which did not appear to be heading for his stumps — away with his hand. Having deliberately handled the ball, he was given out for obstructing the field.
