Football: Unbeaten Caversham still wary

Caversham is unbeaten in the Footballsouth premier division this winter but coach Steve Fleming is not taking a win for granted in the Chatham Cup today.

Caversham showed its class when it downed Dunedin Technical 5-1 in the second round but faces a stiffer test against coach Mike McGarry's Mosgiel team.

"I will be disappointed if we don't continue our good run but we will have to play with the same intensity as the last round," Fleming said.

"Mosgiel is a difficult team to break down."

A key player in the Caversham team is captain Tim Horner at centre back.

He has played for Caversham for 10 years.

"We have a well-balanced squad and everyone chips in at different times," Fleming said.

Mosgiel has a weakened side this weekend because of injuries and university examinations.

"Caversham is unbeaten this year and top of the league," McGarry said.

"We will be up against it."

Key players in the Mosgiel team are Luke Burgess and Morgan Day in the midfield, wing Regan Coldicott and striker Shayne Davidson.

Roslyn-Wakari beat South End (Invercargill) 5-0 in the last round but is not expected to beat Northern Hearts in Timaru today.

"They have been unbeaten for 36 games and we have two of our talented younger players out with university exams," coach James Vaughan said, Key players for Roslyn-Wakari are forward Tom Connor, midfielder Tim Maither and back Dave Shaw.

Four South Island teams will be left in the cup after this weekend's games with two from the Mainland competition and two from Footballsouth.

Only 16 teams will be alive in the country.
