Football: Young guns of the beautiful game

The Fifa Under-20 World Cup kicks off in just 23 days. You won't be seeing all of these players at the tournament, but Hayden Meikle offers this updated World Under-20 XI - two years after naming a similar squad - to give you a taste of some of the amazing talent that will be on display. He has used ratings from the Fifa 15 video game to back up his selections.

Goalkeeper

Simone Scuffet
Country: Italy.

Club: Udinese.

Fifa 15 rating: 71, potential 87.

The oil: The Italians are raving about this kid, labelling him the next Gianluigi Buffon or Dino Zoff - helps that he has the ''ff'' in his name. Saved two penalties in the final of the European under-17 championship.

Defenders

Luke Shaw
Country: England.

Club: Manchester United.

Fifa 15 rating: 75, potential 86.

The oil: Yes, yes, he is perpetually injured and some have claimed he also carries a few extra pounds. But Shaw has a touch of genuine class and will eventually repay that 30 million quid price tag.

Calum Chambers
Country: England.

Club: Arsenal.

Fifa 15 rating: 70, potential 83.

The oil: Yet another talented youngster to roll off the Southampton academy production line. Already has three senior English caps and is seen by Arsene Wenger as the future heart of the Gunners' defence.

Jose Maria Gimenez
Country:
Uruguay.

Club: Atletico Madrid.

Fifa 15 rating: 71, potential 81.

The oil: Just remember this name. They reckon this one is the real deal - and he is on Manchester City's radar.

Midfielders

Jordon Ibe
Country:
England.

Club: Liverpool.

Fifa 15 rating: 67, potential 77.

The oil: Yes, Jordon with an O. He is big, fast and skilled, and Liverpool fans hope he will be the next Raheem Sterling. With more goals and more flexible contract demands.

Youri Tielemans
Country:
Belgium.

Club: Anderlecht.

Fifa 15 rating: 73, potential 88.

The oil: Pretty much everyone rates this kid as the next big thing out of Belgium. Made his Champions League debut at 16. Chased by both Chelsea and Arsenal, they reckon. Can do it all - score, pass, dribble and defend.

Max Meyer
Country:
Germany.

Club: Schalke.

Fifa 15 rating: 75, potential 87.

The oil: Just another ridiculously efficient, all-round genius in a German midfield. Beautifully balanced and with a silky touch, Meyer is going to be among the best 5-6 players in the world before long.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
Country:
Denmark.

Club: Augsburg (on loan from Bayern Munich).

Fifa 15 rating: 67, potential 82.

The oil: Bit of a mouthful but the commentators should start practising now. Made his Bundesliga debut at 17 and already has five senior caps for Denmark.

Adnan Januzaj
Country:
Belgium.

Club: Manchester United.

Fifa 15 rating: 75, potential 87.

The oil: Manchester United still does not seem to have a firm plan for the brilliant wee winger. As a Liverpool fan, may I suggest a swap with want-away brat Raheem Sterling?

Forwards

Divock Origi
Country:
Belgium.

Club: Lille (on loan from Liverpool).

Fifa 15 rating: 75, potential 85.

The oil: Scored the goal that qualified Belgium for the knockout stages of the World Cup last year. Origi is big, strong and quick. He could become something quite special if he starts to score more often. As a Liverpool fan, I certainly hope he does that next season.

Davie Selke
Country
: Germany.

Club: Werder Bremen.

Fifa 15 rating: 62, potential 77.

The oil: A bit of a New Zealand link here - All Whites great Wynton Rufer played for Werder Bremen. Selke was the leading scorer as Germany won the European under-19 title last year.

Last time
In 2013, the Otago Daily Times named a World Under-20 XI. It was:

Goalkeeper: Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Borussia Monchengladbach).

Defenders: David Alaba (Bayern Munich), Raphael Varane (Real Madrid), Andre Wisdom (Liverpool).

Midfielders: Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Paul Pogba (Juventus), Mario Gotze (Borussia Dortmund), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal).

Forwards: Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace), Stephan El-Shaarawy (AC Milan), Romelu Lukaku (West Brom).

Note: To play in the Fifa Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand, players must be born on or after January 1, 1995.
