Ben Kiore could not have timed his return to form better.

The 20-year-old was back to his dynamic best as he bagged a second half hat-trick to help Caversham to a 6-2 win over Otago University.

His pace was lethal as he found space behind the defence, while his finishing touch was clinical.

The ankle injury he had been struggling with seemed no longer a factor either.

That will have been particularly pleasing for Caversham as it heads into its biggest game of the season so far today.

It hosts Auckland's Bay Olympic in the Chatham Cup quarterfinals at Hancock Park.

Having a fully fit and confident Kiore makes Caversham that much more dangerous.

"I've been a little bit out of form recently, it was good to find the back of the net," he said.

"Connor [Neil] set us up well to get back in the game with two goals.

"To get a hat-trick in the second half was fantastic."

Caversham last appeared in the Chatham Cup quarterfinals in 2016 - the only game it did not win that season.

For Kiore, in his second year with the club, it was just his second time past the Cup's first round.

That made it all the more special and he was hopeful the team could compete.

He said the Cup always felt like a bigger deal than a league game and the side was confident going into it.

"Everyone's just real fizzed for it.

"The morale is real good, we can do this for sure.

"To get a result [today] would be fantastic.

"If we go out there and show the sort of ticker we can, that we can actually play, we can beat them.

"We've got pace out wide and our midfield is so strong."

The side has been playing in the South Island league and notched wins against the two local opponents - University and Mosgiel.

Kiore felt the league was a great progression to a higher level, and he was enjoying the challenge it offered.

That higher level still beckons for him.

A former Southern United youth star and national under-17 representative, Kiore played for Tasman United last summer.

His parents are based in Nelson, so he took the opportunity to link with the team.

However, as a third-year student studying finance and accounting, he has returned home to Dunedin.

He has started training with Southern United's initial squad and he hopes to break into the side for the national premiership.

That was his main goal for now, although the main thing was to keep having fun.

"I just want to keep enjoying it.

"As long as its fun for me I'll try as hard as I can.

"Obviously Southern is a definite, I really want to push for that.

"Apart from that I don't know where it's going to take me."

Today's kickoff is at 2pm.
