Teamwork was the key to success for the Otago 14th grade girls football team this season.

The 15-girl squad recently returned from Kaipoi where they won the 14th grade (14-and-under) girls football South Island championship - a tournament they placed second to last in last season.

Team coach Graeme Smaill said the fact the girls had played together for two full seasons and had experience at the tournament last year, was the main reason they were able to make such a drastic improvement on their previous performance.

"It was always a two-year plan with this team - to get them playing together at the beginning of last year and get them into this tournament with that experience behind them," Mr Smaill said.

"It was really all the time they've had together as a team which had a major impact on their performance this year."

Mr Smaill said the girls enjoyed playing with each other and some of the feedback he had received indicated that if the all-girl team wasn't kept intact, a lot of girls would have stopped playing.

"Some of the feedback I've had from the players is that if they weren't able to play with each other on an all-girls team, they would have stopped playing football to concentrate on other sports.

"So it's been good for the girls as a team and hopefully it will be good for girls football, and ultimately women's football, in the future."

The next step to keep the squad together would be to enter them into the local women's grade competition, Mr Smaill said.
