Australian Zach Murray is the clubhouse leader halfway through the first day of the NZ Open in Arrowtown.

Murray shot the best round of his short professional career, hitting a eight under 63 round Millbrook today.

He holds a three-shot lead though there is half the field still out on the course.

New Zealander Ryan Fox shot a three under 68 at Millbrook and is tied for 11th.

Meanwhile, fellow Kiwi Michael Campbell has teed off in his round at The Hills this afternoon.

The 50-year-old former US Open champion is playing his first tournament in six years.

Campbell said he was here to celebrate I'm here to celebrate 100 years of the New Zealand Open and "wouldn't miss that for the world".

The conditions are overcast and cool with little wind.
