Otago Golf Club professional Shelly Duncan coached the New Zealand side to victory at the Aaron Baddeley International Junior championships in China over the weekend.

The championships involved teams from New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Thailand, Chinese-Taipei, United States and China, playing at the Dragon Lake Golf Course in Guangzhou.

The New Zealand team tallied a score of 1514 over four rounds to finish 12 strokes ahead of Japan, with Australia another 13 shots back, in third place.

Masterton teenager Ben Campbell won the top male prize, with a tally of 289 over four rounds, 10 shots clear of the second-placed Japanese golfer.

The New Zealanders' performance was exceptional as the team had the minimum of five members, while the other teams had six players and could afford to drop one score.

Duncan was thrilled with the performance of the players, all of whom performed well on the tough course.

It is thought to be the first time New Zealand has won the tournament.

The tournament is named after top Australian golfer Aaron Baddeley, who had a distinguished junior amateur career, before turning professional.

The other members of the New Zealand team were: Zoe Brake (Bay of Plenty), Landryn Edwards (Bay of Plenty), Andrew Stewart (Bay of Plenty) and Lachlan McDonald (Canterbury).
