After a successful first semester at Southeastern Louisiana University, James Anstiss has returned home and will tee off for the Otago Blue in the senior A pennant final at St Clair this afternoon.

Anstiss (20) played at No2 for the Otago team which reached the national interprovincial final at St Andrews in Hamilton in December, and won the Otago strokeplay title at Balmacewen in January before taking up his golf scholarship in the United States.

Unfortunately, his exams clash with this year's interprovincial in Invercargill and he will not be available for selection.

Anstiss is happy with his record during his first stint in college golf which included setting a course record of eight-under-par 64 in San Antonio in March.

The round included seven birdies, an eagle and one bogey in the 16-college tournament.

Southeastern Louisiana competes in the Southland conference, and finished third in the event.

Anstiss played for the team in the second half and was selected for all eight starts, playing either at No2 or No3 in the five-strong team.

''They have not changed my swing as their coaching style is similar to what I had here but I have had to make radical changes to my short game,'' Anstiss said.

''The greatest change is to my pitching action and I now have the ball well forward in my stance with zero shaft lean.

''This has been a better technique over there, as the grass is so grainy the club just slides through it.''

Anstiss had a stroke average of 73.1 for his competitive rounds and at the end of the conference he received several accolades.

He was named in the second Louisiana team, in the third Southland conference team and was chosen as the newcomer of the year for his team and the conference.

''These teams are named at the end of the conference but they are just for the glory, as they never get to play any competitive golf.''
