Kazuma Kobori could not have been more consistent at Balmacewen at the weekend.

The talented Rangiora youngster led from start to finish and made a single bogey to defend his Otago men’s strokeplay title by a comfortable 12 shots.

Kobori, also the reigning South Island amateur champion, held a two-shot lead after the opening round on Saturday with a four-under-par 67.

While many others struggled to go low in the afternoon, he fired another 67 to lead by six shots from Otago golfer Brandon Hodgson, who shot back-to-back 70s on his home course, going into the third and final round.

Yesterday, in slightly damp conditions, Kobori’s metronomic performance continued.

A third straight 67 gave him a three-round, 12-under-par total of 201.

Left in his wake were fellow visitors Liam Hewitt (Queens Park) and Dominic Brettkelly (Hororata), who finished tied for second with even-par totals of 213.

Otago matchplay and New Zealand mid-amateur champion Phil Bungard (St Clair) was the best of the locals, finishing fourth at two-over for the tournament.

Russley golfer Zachary May (three-over) and Hodgson (four-over) rounded out the top six.

Vivian Lu (Royal Auckland) won the women’s title by eight shots.

She fired rounds of 70, 73 and 71 on the par-73 women’s course for a five-under-par total of 214.

Otago No 1 Sumin Kang (Wakatipu) was second at three-over, recovering nicely after blowing out to 77 in the first round, adding rounds of 74 and a tidy 71.

Darae Chung (Shandon) was third at 12-over, and Yoonae Jeong (Wakatipu) fourth at 14-over.

Wakatipu junior Jan Ebbinge won the division two men’s title by five shots, and Ryan Rosevear (Taieri Lakes) won division three by eight shots.
